A similar expedition was aborted three weeks later:

The next day (Saturday) [January 17] came rations of onions, potatoes, dried apples, &c., another sign of a move, for never do rations come so plentifully unless they want to clean out the Commissary Department…They load down the men and empty the wagons…

Tuesday morning, Jan. 20.—Tents were ordered to be struck and ‘pack up’ sounded. The Regiment started at one p.m. towards the ford above on the Rappahannock. Night over took the Brigade only about five miles from camp, and they camped in the woods. Next morning they start again, and move about one mile and a half. The rain of the night before made it impossible to move the artillery through the mud. Again the Brigade…camped in the woods. All day long, it rained or drizzled, and all night.

Thursday, Jan. 22d.—All prospects for a forward move seemed to vanish, for squads were sent back for axes to build corduroy roads, so as to be able to get the artillery back to camp…

Saturday afternoon (Jan 24th) the 5th corps started on their way back to camp which was reached about four p.m., a tired lot. (U&A 2/3/1863)
